Nigel was my step-father. He came into my life in 1994 when he took my mother out on the most disastrous picnic to thank her for recording “Life in the Freezer” by David Attenborough, whilst he had ironically been away in Antarctica!
I say disastrous as he forgot to check the forecast and after they had sat down for their quails eggs, white wine and pork pies (he was quite the charmer!) it poured with rain.
They rapidly retreated to the car into a rapidly forming fog and then became totally lost.
My mum however, a St Thomas’s trained Nightingale nurse, had experienced much worse than this, and thought the whole adventure extremely funny.
In 1998 he left his bachelor pad in London for the peaceful life in Chichester with my mum – they married in 2003.
He was an incredible man. He had so many stories of his adventures, and whilst having the most adorable air of charm and slight disorganisation, he managed to run Ocean Explorer successfully for many years from his office that he rented just a short walk from home.
As I grew up and had many different careers, collecting a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) on the way, Nigel sadly grew older and frailer.
He would still make his daily journey to the office, but was soon finding it harder to manage. As luck would have it, I was living close by and had just taken a redundancy package from my last employer and so, when asked if I could spend some time with Nigel and help him in the office I was more than delighted to help.
It took months to fully understand the business and the amazing relationships that he had created with his suppliers and customers, as quite often we’d find old newspaper clippings in his filing cabinets which would lead us on another huge adventure.
When Nigel was finally diagnosed with vascular dementia, the entire running of Ocean Explorer fell to me. When he very sadly passed away in 2017, he asked me to carry on the business.
I was deeply honoured to be able to take the helm and continue what he had established.
I spend my time with the business, my husband and my teenage son, but I love to travel too.
One of my favourite places in the world is the Outer Hebrides, particularly North Uist, Scotland, as we have had family living there for over 200 years.
I still have Nigel’s two favourite places to visit though: Antarctica and Galapagos – these are definitely on my bucket list!
PC Graphics created the maps for Ocean Explorer with Nigel and have a page on their website dedicated specifically to their work on the Ocean Explorer Maps.
